Managing your bills

Managing your bills

It is important that you take time to read through your bills and make sure they are accurate. If you write down how much you pay each company each month you can see how much your bills go up or down over time.

Keep a record of your bills, filed in order and in a safe place, so you can easily find your account information and useful contact details if you need them.

After time you may want to throw old bills away. Be careful to destroy them properly so nobody can get hold of your personal informationBeing organised with your bills will help you pay them on time and stay out of debt.

Paying your bills

If you have a bank account, the best way to stay on top of your bills is to pay them by Direct Debit or Standing Order, this way your bills will always be paid on time which can prevent late payment charges.

Many companies give discounts or offer promotions to customers who pay by Direct Debit - which could save you money!

When you set up a Standing Order, choose a payment date when you know you that the money will be in your account to pay it, such as just after pay day.

You will still get a bill each month, but it will just show what will be debited from your account for your records and then this will automatically be taken on your chosen date.

If you have access to the internet you can often choose to have ‘paperless billing’, which means the billing company doesn’t send you anything through the post. Instead, they send you your bill by email each month and you can check your account online whenever you like. Again, there are often discounts for customers who sign up to this!

If you pay by Direct Debit you are covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee. Every company offering Direct Debit payment must follow strict rules and tell you what the payment amounts are and when they will be collecting the money. They also have to tell you about any changes in writing.

This guarantee also protects you. If a wrong payment is ever collected there are laws in place to make sure you get the money back in full.

Did you know?

If you have a bank or giro account you can pay your rent by Direct Debit. This is the easiest method of payment for the majority of our customers.
